Elixi-CARE OD, 1,2-octanediol, is a multifunctional cosmetic ingredient with moisturizing capacities and is very often used as an active with antimicrobial properties.
At room temperature Elixi-CARE OD is a waxy substance that becomes a liquid at approximately 30°C to 35°C. Elixi-CARE OD is effective in most cosmetic formulations like toners, gels, creams, lotions, wipes as well as in rinse-off products like shampoos, bodywashes, etc.
Elixi-CARE OD is used as a solvent, a humectant, and a viscosity decreasing agent. As a solvent, it can help to dissolve other ingredients and improve the spread ability of products. As a humectant, it can help to moisturize the skin by attracting and retaining moisture from the air. As a viscosity decreasing agent, it can help to thin out products and improve their flow. As an active with antimicrobial properties, it will support the efficacy of different preservative ingredients.
The recommended use concentration for Elixi-CARE OD, 1,2-octanediol, is 0.2 % - 1.0 %. When used in emulsions , it is recommended to incorporate Elixi-CARE OD as much as possible into the water phase, despite the low solubility in water. It is highly soluble in oils and can be used in anhydrous formulas.
