UV filters are compounds that can protect-through different mechanisms of action-the skin from UV rays, through absorption, reflection or scattering of UV radiation. There are two main types of filters: chemical and mineral UV filters. In 2003, Europe established a list of 27 UV filters authorized in sun creams: 25 chemical and 2 mineral ones.
