Diethylene glycol divinyl ether

Diethylene glycol divinyl ether (DGEVE) is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₈H₁₄O₃. It is a clear, colorless to pale yellow liquid with a faint odor, and it is highly soluble in a variety of organic solvents. Structurally, it contains two vinyl ether groups attached to a diethylene glycol backbone, making it highly reactive in polymerization and cross-linking reactions. This compound is widely used as a reactive diluent and cross-linking agent, particularly in the formulation of UV-curable coatings, inks, and adhesives.

Applications

  • UV-Curable Coatings and Inks: Diethylene glycol divinyl ether is commonly used in UV-curable formulations. Its vinyl ether groups allow for rapid polymerization under UV light, creating durable, flexible coatings. It is valued in applications such as industrial coatings, printing inks, and varnishes where quick curing and high performance are essential.

  • Adhesives and Sealants: In adhesive formulations, DGEVE acts as a cross-linking agent that enhances the adhesion, flexibility, and chemical resistance of the final product. It is particularly effective in adhesives that need strong bonding on a variety of surfaces, including metals, glass, and plastics.

  • Chemical Intermediate: Diethylene glycol divinyl ether is often used as an intermediate in chemical synthesis. Its reactivity enables it to be incorporated into more complex polymer structures or used to create materials with tailored properties, such as hydrophilicity, flexibility, or improved thermal resistance.

  • Cross-Linking Agent in Polymer Production: Due to its di-vinyl ether functionality, DGEVE is useful in creating cross-linked polymers, enhancing the material’s mechanical strength, chemical stability, and resilience. These polymers find applications in specialized fields like electronics, aerospace, and automotive industries.

  • Resins and Composite Materials: In resin and composite formulations, DGEVE helps improve flexibility and impact resistance. This makes it suitable for products like fiberglass composites, advanced coatings, and certain types of plastics that require both durability and elasticity.

  • Dental and Medical Applications: Diethylene glycol divinyl ether is sometimes used in dental materials and medical devices due to its biocompatibility when properly formulated and cured. It is employed in UV-cured dental resins and other medical coatings where fast curing and durability are important.
