Pentaerythritol tetra-stearate (PT100)

Pentaerythritol tetra-stearate (PT100) is an ester of pentaerythritol, a polyol compound, and stearic acid, a long-chain fatty acid. Its chemical formula is C₂₀H₄₀O₄, and it appears as a white, waxy solid at room temperature. PT100 is used primarily as a lubricant, stabilizer, and emulsifier in a variety of industrial applications. It is known for its excellent dispersibility in both aqueous and non-aqueous systems, as well as for its high thermal stability and low volatility. Pentaerythritol tetra-stearate also possesses properties that make it useful as a release agent in various manufacturing processes.


Applications

  • Lubricant and Release Agent: PT100 is widely used as a lubricant in metalworking processes, where it helps to reduce friction and wear. It is particularly beneficial in applications such as die-casting, extrusion, and injection molding, as it provides smooth flow and prevents sticking of materials to molds and machinery.

 

  • Stabilizer in Plastics and Polymers: PT100 is used as a stabilizer in the production of certain plastics and polymers, particularly in the manufacturing of thermoplastics, to enhance the material’s processability and stability. Its lubricating properties also make it useful in reducing processing temperatures and improving the flow of polymers.

 

  • Emulsifier and Dispersing Agent: Due to its amphiphilic nature (possessing both hydrophobic and hydrophilic parts), PT100 is employed as an emulsifier and dispersing agent in the production of emulsions, such as in cosmetics and personal care products. It helps to mix oils and water in formulations, ensuring a stable consistency in products like lotions, creams, and hair care products.

 

  • Cosmetic and Personal Care Products: In personal care formulations, PT100 is used in products like skin creams, lotions, and deodorants for its emulsifying and stabilizing properties. It can also function as an opacifier, contributing to the smooth texture and appearance of cosmetic products.

 

  • Additive in Paints and Coatings: PT100 is used as an additive in paints and coatings to improve their flow characteristics, reduce friction during application, and enhance the durability of the applied coatings.
